22 Bullets: 2010

Director - Richard Berry
Written by - Richard Berry
Stars - Jean Reno, Marina Fois and Kad Merad

As I said in the review for Taken I love a good revenge film, but 22 Bullets is a massive let down as I'm a fan of Jean Reno, but his performance is lack luster. The story sounded good as Jean Reno's character is an ex mafia boss who is shot 22 times and survives. His kids are also kidnapped which in turn drives him to seek revenge on who ever has done this. Right from from the start of the film you can tell no care has been put into it. Its badly shot with a lot of shaky up close fight scene's and car chases. I think in general the film has a poor script and is badly acted which is a shame as Jean Reno is a good actor. I advise anyone that this film should be given a miss and really is only for the real die hard fans of revenge films. You would be better off watching Oldboy or Wasabi.

Taken: 2008

Director - Pierre Morel
Written by - Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen
Stars - Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen

It has to be said that I love a good revenge film. For example Oldboy is one of the all times great films for me. Along with kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, A Bittersweet Life and Man on Fire so I am a little bit biased to this genre. Liam Neilson does a great performance as the highly trained government agent and father of a girl who has been kidnapped and sold as a prostitute. He goes on a great revenge filled trip to kill the people reasonable for the kidnapping of his daughter. Not the best written film or directed but all in all an enjoyable watch for anyone out there who enjoys a good revenge flick.

The King's Speech: 2010

Director - Tom Hooper
Written by - David Seidler
Stars - Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter

This film is possibly the best film of 2011 and is one of the best films I have seen in a long time. For the first time I feel that the royal family have been brought down to a human level by Colin Firths brilliant performance as King George VI. The film really makes you feel sorry for what he had to go thought and the troubles he had to face. Geoffrey Rush also is brilliant in this film and is one of his best performances. It also has to be said that Helena Bonham Carter is very good which I think is rare for her. All in all this film deserves to get the Oscar and Colin Firth should get the Oscar for best actor. Love this film.

Black Swan: 2010

Director - Darren Aronofsky
Written by - Mark Heyman
Stars - Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel

Black Swan is the first film this Oscar session that I have seen that deserves to get the Oscar for best film. Black swan grips right from the start and never loses pace as you see the talented dancer Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) fall from grace. I believe one of the best things in Black Swan is the relationship between Nina Sayers and her mother Erica Sayers (Barbara Hershey)as she keeps her like a child, which in the end ultimately ends up adding to tragic fall of Nina.

This is so far is the best performance from Natalie Portman I have seen. I believe Natalie Portman's past choices in films have been bad apart from Garden State and Leon, which are two of my favourite films. I think that out off all the performances so far that are up for the Oscars in 2011 Natalie Portman is by far the best. You can tell the care that she put in this role on the bases that she spent an entire year practicing being a ballet dancer and this even continued into the filming off Black Swan.

I think this film is a must for ever one as it is beautifully created and you feel the care that has gone into it.

The Other Guys: 2010

Director - Adam McKay
Writers - Adam MaKay and Chris Henchy
Stars - Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson

At the start of the film there are some great scenes involving Samuel L.Jackson and Dwayne Johnson as two over the top New York City hero cops P.K Highsmith and Christopher Danson. Thing these scenes are some of the best scenes in the film and gets the most laughs. I believe there should be a spin off film just about these two characters. The rest of the film sadly doesn't keep the laughs or the pace that is set at the being. There are some good little moments, but these always come for Will Farrells character Allen Gamble and you just get the feeling that Terry Hoitz played by Mark Walhberg is the poor cousin. Who is purely there for the purpose of setting Will Farrell up.

All in all The Other Guys does have some stand out moments such meeting Allen Gambles (Will Farrell) wife Sheila played by Eva Mendes and the over the cop scenes as I mentioned before. But the film just doesn't hit the right spots and feels a bit flat. I would say that you would be better off watching one of Will Farrell's other films such as Anchorman and Elf.
